My Journey as a Podiatrist in Randwick, Eastern Suburbs
Trusted Podiatrist serving Randwick, Coogee, South Coogee, Clovelly, Maroubra, Kingsford and Kensington for over 30 years
By Dr Emily Alston
My personal and professional journey has been deeply intertwined with the vibrant communities of Randwick, Coogee, South Coogee, Clovelly, Maroubra, Kingsford and Kensington. These suburbs have not only shaped my career but have also been home to many treasured memories with my family.
In the early days of my career, I worked with South Sydney Area Health, a community organisation focused on supporting underprivileged and high-risk populations across these areas. I spent a significant amount of time working with Indigenous communities, where I treated complex foot and leg ulcers for patients with immunosuppression and endocrine-related conditions. It was a rewarding experience to help improve health outcomes for individuals who otherwise might have struggled to access care.
I also gained invaluable experience at Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick, where I provided general podiatry treatments over 25 years ago. This role allowed me to hone my skills while supporting patients across the Eastern Suburbs. My connection to Randwick deepened further through my collaborations with Orthosports, where I’ve worked alongside Dr Ivan Popoff to help patients before and after knee surgeries. Additionally, I’ve worked closely with Dr Robert Mundell at Wales Medical Centre, addressing the diverse podiatry needs of the Randwick community.
Kensington played a pivotal role in my early training. As a student at UNSW, I trained at the Kensington Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic, where I prescribed exercise programmes and conducted podiatry evaluations for students and sports patients. These experiences laid the foundation for my career and gave me a deep appreciation for the importance of multidisciplinary care.
Coogee holds a special place in my heart, both personally and professionally. I continue to collaborate with Dr Naomi Jacobs and Dr Christopher Blainey at Coogee Medical Centre, as well as Dr Melissa Overton at Coogee Beach Doctors. I’ve also worked closely with Sarah Kelly at Activate Occupational Therapy in Coogee to provide holistic care to shared patients. Being part of the Coogee Bay Diggers fitness community has been a joy, where I regularly treat members to help them maintain their active lifestyles. On a personal note, I’ve cherished family outings to Coogee Beach, where my children and I would spend hours enjoying the rock pools and making sandcastles.
In South Coogee, I’ve had the privilege of supporting residents at South Coogee Residential Aged Care through informative talks and treatments tailored to their needs. Similarly, I’ve worked with Bupa Maroubra, providing foot health advice and care to residents, helping them maintain their mobility and independence. Maroubra is a special place for my family as well, many weekends were spent enjoying the surf and grabbing fish and chips at Barnacles on the beach.
Clovelly and Kingsford have also played significant roles in my career. I’ve performed many podiatry home visits within their rich multicultural communities and explored the diverse cuisine with my family after long days of work.
From collaborations with local healthcare professionals to supporting residents at various life stages, I’m proud to be able to give back by providing expert podiatry care to Coogee, Randwick and the surrounding suburbs. For those seeking trusted foot care, my clinic at Double Bay Podiatry is always here to help.

Common FAQs
Do I need a referral to visit a podiatry?
No, you don’t need a referral to visit a podiatrist in Australia.
Podiatrists in Australia are primary healthcare practitioners, meaning you can book an appointment directly without needing a referral from a GP or another medical professional. This makes it easy to access care for any foot, ankle, or lower limb concerns without delay.
However, if you plan to claim your visit through Medicare (under a Chronic Disease Management Plan), Veterans’ Affairs, or Workers’ Compensation, a referral from your GP is required. Private health insurance may also cover podiatry services, depending on your level of extras cover, but a referral is not necessary for claiming these benefits.
At Double Bay Podiatry, we welcome patients with or without referrals and are happy to guide you on any eligibility requirements for Medicare or private insurance claims.
What can I expect during my first appointment?
Your first podiatry appointment at Double Bay Podiatry is a 45-minute session designed to provide thorough and personalised care. It begins with a detailed assessment of your medical history, current symptoms, and lifestyle factors, followed by a physical examination of your feet, ankles, and lower limbs. Your podiatrist will explain their findings, provide a diagnosis if applicable, and discuss the underlying causes of your condition.
During the appointment, a tailored treatment plan will be created to address your needs. This may include immediate care, such as toenail trimming or orthotic adjustments, and long-term strategies like exercises, footwear advice, or orthotic prescriptions. If further imaging or specialist referrals are needed, your podiatrist will guide you through the process. You’ll also receive practical advice for managing your foot health at home.
At Double Bay Podiatry, we ensure your first visit is unhurried, comprehensive, and focused on setting you on the path to better foot health.
How long does each appointment run?
How can I prepare for my appointment?
Preparing for your chiropodist appointment ensures you get the most out of your session. Start by gathering any relevant information, such as past medical records, imaging results like X-rays or ultrasounds, or referrals, to give our podiatry team a comprehensive view of your condition. It’s also helpful to think about your concerns beforehand. Make a list of any symptoms or questions you’d like to discuss so nothing important is overlooked during your visit.
Wear footwear you use most often—whether for work, exercise, or casual wear—so Dr Emily Alston can assess their impact on your foot health. Comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your feet and ankles is recommended, as your podiatrist will need to perform a thorough examination. Additionally, being familiar with your medical history, including previous injuries or treatments, will help our team tailor their care to your needs.
Do you treat children and seniors?
Yes, at Double Bay Podiatry, we provide expert care for patients of all ages, including children and seniors. Dr Emily Alston has extensive experience in addressing the unique needs of these age groups, offering tailored treatments to support growing feet in children and maintaining comfort and mobility for seniors.
For children, we specialise in assessing and treating issues like flat feet, walking patterns, and sports injuries. Dr Emily has also conducted numerous foot health talks in schools across the Eastern Suburbs, educating children and parents on the importance of foot care during these pivotal developmental stages.
For seniors, we offer comprehensive care for age-related concerns such as arthritis, diabetic foot care, and mobility challenges. Dr Emily is actively involved in the local community, regularly giving talks at aged care facilities and retirement homes to provide valuable advice on maintaining foot health and independence.
Our personalised approach ensures that every patient—whether a toddler taking their first steps or a senior aiming to stay active—receives the compassionate and expert care they deserve.
