My Early Days as a Podiatrist in Bondi Junction
Experienced Podiatrist serving Bondi Junction, Waverley and Queens Park for over 30 years
By Dr Emily Alston
My connection to Bondi Junction is deeply personal and professional, shaped by the early days of my career and the vibrant community I’ve come to know so well. Over 30 years ago, I had my very first role as a podiatrist in Bondi Junction under Leonard Gentin, now practicing at Gentin Podiatry & Physiotherapy. Those formative years taught me the importance of collaboration and connection, lessons that have remained at the core of my practice.
Professionally, I’ve had the privilege of working with many exceptional healthcare providers in Bondi Junction, including Kevin Shapiro at Eastern Suburbs Physiotherapy Centre, dermatologist Dr Frank Isaac, Dr David Wong and Dr Tony White at Eastern Suburbs Dermatology, and the great work of the team at Women in Focus Physiotherapy. These collaborations have allowed me to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary care to my podiatry in Bondi Junction, ensuring that individual needs are met. I’ve also worked closely with Ebley Street Medical Centre, further solidifying my ties to the local medical community.
Caring for seniors has always been a meaningful part of my work as a podiatrist in Bondi Junction and the Eastern Suburbs. I’ve had the privilege of providing talks, assessments, and personalised care for residents at Queens Park Retirement Village and Uniting Mayflower Edina Bondi Junction. These opportunities allow me to address common foot health concerns and diabetic foot health in Bondi Junction, promote mobility, and help residents maintain their independence and quality of life. From footwear consultations to on-site assessments, I’m committed to ensuring seniors in Bondi Junction receive the attention and care they deserve.
Bondi Junction has always been a hub of activity, and I have fond memories of shopping with my children at the iconic Westfield Shopping Centre. As a podiatrist in Bondi Junction I often recommended that locals visit The Athlete’s Foot store there, which uses modern methods to help people find the perfect footwear.
Over the years, I’ve treated many athletes foot pain in Bondi Junction, including regular clients from Igor MMA, keeping them fit and ready to compete! But it’s not just athletes, many visitors to my clinic begin their search for a medi-pedi in Bondi Junction and soon find themselves making the short trip to Double Bay for a pampered, luxurious experience that keeps their feet both healthy and beautifully cared for.
I’ve always found Waverley to be incredibly community-oriented, with its shops exuding a charming village-like feel. Early in my career, I even ran my own practice, Waverley Podiatry, which allowed me to build lasting connections with locals. To this day, I refer patients to the War Memorial Hospital’s rehabilitation services, as I’ve seen firsthand how invaluable they are for recovery and mobility.
Some of my fondest memories are tied to Waverley Oval, watching Waverley College schoolboys’ rugby games, especially when my sons were playing. I’ve also had the privilege of treating the dedicated bus drivers at the Waverley Bus Depot, addressing common issues like foot cramps caused by long hours of driving.
Beyond clinical care, I’ve enjoyed giving back to the Waverley, Bondi Junction, and Queens Park communities through my podiatry, delivering talks to students and parents at Waverley College and volunteering at local sports carnivals to assist with injuries and strapping needs.
These experiences have not only strengthened my bond with Bondi Junction, Waverley and Queens Park locals but also deepened my appreciation for the vibrant, community-oriented spirit that defines these areas, and I’m proud to continue supporting the health and well-being of their residents from my nearby clinic at Double Bay Podiatry.

Common FAQs
Do I need a referral to visit a podiatry?
No, you don’t need a referral to visit a podiatrist in Australia.
Podiatrists in Australia are primary healthcare practitioners, meaning you can book an appointment directly without needing a referral from a GP or another medical professional. This makes it easy to access care for any foot, ankle, or lower limb concerns without delay.
However, if you plan to claim your visit through Medicare (under a Chronic Disease Management Plan), Veterans’ Affairs, or Workers’ Compensation, a referral from your GP is required. Private health insurance may also cover podiatry services, depending on your level of extras cover, but a referral is not necessary for claiming these benefits.
At Double Bay Podiatry, we welcome patients with or without referrals and are happy to guide you on any eligibility requirements for Medicare or private insurance claims.
What can I expect during my first appointment?
Your first podiatry appointment at Double Bay Podiatry is a 45-minute session designed to provide thorough and personalised care. It begins with a detailed assessment of your medical history, current symptoms, and lifestyle factors, followed by a physical examination of your feet, ankles, and lower limbs. Your podiatrist will explain their findings, provide a diagnosis if applicable, and discuss the underlying causes of your condition.
During the appointment, a tailored treatment plan will be created to address your needs. This may include immediate care, such as toenail trimming or orthotic adjustments, and long-term strategies like exercises, footwear advice, or orthotic prescriptions. If further imaging or specialist referrals are needed, your podiatrist will guide you through the process. You’ll also receive practical advice for managing your foot health at home.
At Double Bay Podiatry, we ensure your first visit is unhurried, comprehensive, and focused on setting you on the path to better foot health.
How long does each appointment run?
How can I prepare for my appointment?
Preparing for your chiropodist appointment ensures you get the most out of your session. Start by gathering any relevant information, such as past medical records, imaging results like X-rays or ultrasounds, or referrals, to give our podiatry team a comprehensive view of your condition. It’s also helpful to think about your concerns beforehand. Make a list of any symptoms or questions you’d like to discuss so nothing important is overlooked during your visit.
Wear footwear you use most often—whether for work, exercise, or casual wear—so Dr Emily Alston can assess their impact on your foot health. Comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your feet and ankles is recommended, as your podiatrist will need to perform a thorough examination. Additionally, being familiar with your medical history, including previous injuries or treatments, will help our team tailor their care to your needs.
Do you treat children and seniors?
Yes, at Double Bay Podiatry, we provide expert care for patients of all ages, including children and seniors. Dr Emily Alston has extensive experience in addressing the unique needs of these age groups, offering tailored treatments to support growing feet in children and maintaining comfort and mobility for seniors.
For children, we specialise in assessing and treating issues like flat feet, walking patterns, and sports injuries. Dr Emily has also conducted numerous foot health talks in schools across the Eastern Suburbs, educating children and parents on the importance of foot care during these pivotal developmental stages.
For seniors, we offer comprehensive care for age-related concerns such as arthritis, diabetic foot care, and mobility challenges. Dr Emily is actively involved in the local community, regularly giving talks at aged care facilities and retirement homes to provide valuable advice on maintaining foot health and independence.
Our personalised approach ensures that every patient—whether a toddler taking their first steps or a senior aiming to stay active—receives the compassionate and expert care they deserve.
Can I get a home visit from a podiatrist to Bondi Junction?
Yes, podiatry home visits to Bondi Junction, Waverley and Queens Park are available from Double Bay Podiatry if you’re unable to attend the clinic due to mobility issues, age-related challenges, or other restrictions. Dr Emily Alston has a long history of providing podiatry visits to patients in Bondi Junction and surrounding suburbs, ensuring those who cannot travel still receive expert podiatric treatment in the comfort of their homes.
If you require a home visit, please contact us to discuss your needs, and we’ll work with you to arrange a convenient time. Our goal is to make high-quality foot care accessible to everyone in the community.
